What Parkinsons Teaches Us About the Brain (forced exercise beneficial)

Scientific discoveries can be serendipitous, and so it was when Jay L. Alberts, then a Parkinson’s disease researcher at Emory University in Atlanta, mounted a tandem bike with Cathy Frazier, a Parkinson’s patient. The two were riding the 2003 RAGBRAI bicycle tour across Iowa, hoping to raise awareness of the neurodegenerative disease and “show people with Parkinson’s that you don’t have to sit back and let the disease take over your life,” Dr. Alberts said.

Tip your protein balance to curb hunger pangs

Meat lovers, rejoice. The long-held notion that protein-rich diets are more filling appears to be true, which means that hitting the right balance between protein, carbohydrates and fat can curb overeating.

Researchers from the University of Sydney, Australia, tested three diets on 22 male and female participants. All three diets were made up of the same meals and optional snacks, but modified to contain 10, 15 or 25 per cent protein. Each subject spent four days on each one.

Users must opt in for web porn

FOUR of the UK's biggest internet service providers are to force customers to opt IN if they want to view porn.

BT, Virgin Media, Sky and Talk Talk have agreed to the measure as part of a Government crackdown to protect children from filth.

Customers signing up to the web giants will have to choose whether they want to be able to log on to explicit sites in a bid to limit what material kids can access.

Great info-graphic comparing dopamine levels of drugs, sex and porn

Just found this graphic. It's great because this is what I imagine might happen during a porn session where you edge (use porn without climaxing) for a while. Note that all the other graphs are taken from rat research, where a probe was inserted into the nucleus accumbens of the reward circuitry. Please know that no one has measured dopamine levels in human brains during sex or porn viewing.

Scientists discover fickle DNA changes in brain (Another paradigm goes bye bye)

Comments: Another paradigm goes bye bye. Old model said that cells need to be dividing to undergo mutations, or epigenetic changes. Most brain cells (neurons) do not divide. When cells divide they copy their DNA, which allows mistakes to occur. Bottom line is that epigenetic changes can occur due to stimulation. Makes sense evolutionarily to have a flexible system.
