From whence came courtly love? What are the roots from which the corruptible vine sprang? What mythic currents did the medieval mind have access to? Surely it had purer beginnings. Consider the possibilities.... Actually, there is not enough space here, but to start ...
When a man loves a woman, he seeks union with her, that is to say the most complete union possible in love, and there is in the elemental sphere no greater union than that between the sexes. [Man's] contemplation of the [Ultimate] Reality in woman is the most complete and perfect... Contemplation of the Reality without formal support is not possible. . . . Since, therefore, some form of support is necessary, the best and most perfect kind is the contemplation of God in woman. The greatest union is that between man and woman.
– Ibn al-Arabi
One day the Prophet was asked, “Although the highest truths are always hidden, is it possible to derive strength from them through the mediation of form?” The prophet replied, “Of course. Look at the form of heaven and earth!”
Draw strength from Universal reality through the medium of form....
– Jaladin al-Rumi
Two of the greatest sufi’s, Rumi, following Arabi wrote suggesting that The intelligent order of creation in manifesting existence can be revealed by contemplation of it’s objects. As Jesus said (Thomas) cleave wood and I am there. This is the Kabbalistic idea of “holy sparks” which indwell the whole of creation and are to be reclaimed as a part of the great Light. So too in the pure embrace is the life force to be (truly) meditated upon. It is this force of life itself which is - in potential - the pearl of great price. Produced by agitation of the body shell, the sexual energy like a grain of sand when held within, builds up a spiritual beingness, an immortal body of Bliss and blessedness The lovers then, are initiators of one another into the resurrection from the flesh. The Body itself over time, releasing it’s atomic potential becomes a body of light energy - a risen or resurrection body - which can be felt long before it can be seen. This is the magnetic aura, the charisma of chastity which arises as it endures the baptism of Fire - desire consuming itself -as it is refined. Venus rising from the scallop shell (as she is painted by Botticelli) is the fruit. Divine love is the transmutation of sex. There are two Venus’s spoken of: the terrestrial and the celestial. One represents procreation and the other rebirth of the spirit, assuming once again the stature of the original couple before the fall.
This transcendence of the biological impulse takes time. The bridal chamber is a sacred place of the Shekinah, the presence of God according to the Zohar. It further says that the Holy One does not choose to dwell where the male and female are not united. Thus the wings of the male and female Cherubim covered the Ark like a canopy. This again is the place of the baptism of fire and the Holy Spirit. Those who aspire to come to this wedding must approach with the oil of their loins gathered in anticipation. The generative life collected into themselves like the animals into Noak’s ark. Then the living watters will rise up to cleanse the earthly shell inside and out. So when the sumarian woman asked for the “living water “, Jesus told her to go and call her husband. Two by two is the ark entered. By living water (the life force which flows through our energy system) and by the fire of agape union for the suneisaktoi (those “brought in together” to the Christian conversion) is the radiance of the Spirit revealed.
Indeed the discipline of chastity -conjugal or otherwise -had been universally encouraged by the great teachers. Sex is the only power within the psychosomatic organism which is great enough to move the mountain of human-animal inertia. Like a seed itÂ’s nature is to grow from something insignificant to something greater than itÂ’s form would suggest. . No exercise of magical will or yogic posturing alone will prove to be the way to the higher Life.
Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a woman hiding leaven in flower. The priests knew this to be a reference to something commonly considered evil and Jesus uses leaven with this meaning elsewhere.
To compare Kingdom to leaven means that Kingdom has an inverse relation to what is normally considered religious ... By using leaven the parable announces that the sacredÂ’s manifestation is an inversion of expectation.
– Bernard Brandon Scott
One could postulate that fearing a return of the goddess to the temple, Jesus had to be done away with. Just so one would expect any Sacrament of the Bridal Chamber to meet great resistance, as the holy calling o the Agapete in fact did.
The nature and power of agape was known from the earliest of times. and preserved in the kabbalistic text fo the Song of Songs for those who could see. It was the same power which raised Enkidu from animal to man in the Sumarian epic of Gilgamesh:
One day a goddess commanded Shamhat, a priestess of sacred sex, to leave the
temple and go make love to Enkidu in the wilderness....
... for six days and seven nights, Enkidu stayed aroused,
and had intercourse with the [sacred] harlot
until he was sated with her charms.
But when he turned his attention to his animals,
the Gazelles saw Enkidu and darted off,
the wild animals distanced themselves from his body....
But then he drew himself up, for his understanding had broadened....
The [sacred] harlot said to Enkidu:
“You are beautiful, Enkidu, you are become like a god.”
